Okay, coming from the ceiling are a white, red and black wire. Coming from the fan are a white, black and blue wire and the light kit has a white and black wire. Whites are all wired. When I wire the black (ceiling) to black fan to black light kit wire and the red (ceiling) to blue fan wire, the fan works and the light kit does not. When I take the red wire from ceiling and connect to the black wire from fan and the black wire from ceiling and connect to blue wire from fan, the light kit works but the fan doesn’t. How do I get both to work? It has something to do with the ceiling wires, but just reversing them doesn’t make both work. Thanks for your help!

Have a look at the page I listed below. This guy knows what he is talking about. The one thing you may not be considering is when you you get red and black wires in a box it tips me off; that box has a switch lag in it. Dan, the guy with the web page, has a drawing on the specific page I listed. If it doesn’t help contact me through my profile and I will take the time to draw out all your descriptions and try to figure out what is happening.

I agree with Jim. Whites should all be tired together for neutral. Connect all blacks together and the red to the blue on the ceiling fan. The way I pictured it being wired is so that after you connect it this way, the switch should only work the light kit and the fan should work from the pull string on the fan.

If there is a Red wire in that ceiling box It should look like this.
All Blacks are together, all whites are together and the one red hanging out. If this is the way it look when you took down the old fixture, then the red is being used by the switch. Black is a basic feed in and out to another room. If you want everything to work on the switch then wire the Black and Blue to the red in the box. But both pull chains need to be pulled in order to make it work. If it don’t work Please call a License Electrician for trouble shooting.

I hope this was a little help.
    Good Luck.

You are without power on the black wire when you get them all hooked up. You should have all whites together, the red and the fan (blue) together. the blacks should all be connected. When this is done and the light switch is turned on in the fixture and in the wall you should have lights, fan and action. Since you do not, then somewhere the black lead is open. This could be at the switch in the wall or a connection box in between. The only way to locate the problem is with some basic test equipment and to go looking for the open. If all fails, then call a qualified professional electrician to do the work.

You do not mention any switches.
Usually 2 switches are used 1 for the fan (black wire in ceiling box)
and 1 switch for lights( red wire in ceiling box.
If you have only one switch then the black wire would always be hot and the red would have a switch for lights.

There is sometimes a situation where the electrician ran a three wire from a switch to ceiling box and the red wire was left safe in switch for future use. If you have a single switch in a single box and the red wire is there not connected then you would need a stack switch which is two switches one over the other to fit the box and connect the red wire to one switch.

If you can’t find the red wire to make work your only out would be to connect the black and the blue from fan to the ceiling black and use the pull chain on fan.
